I heard budding novelist and Washington Post columnist David Ignatius talking on a local public radio station today, the day Bibi is visiting with Obama. He was laying out the plot of his new novel and he seemed, perhaps to some, to mangle the concept of dual loyalty, not to speak of loyalty in general. In my opinion, an American is not supposed to be loyal to a given politician, nor loyal to the bosses of his particular bureaucracy (in Ignatius' example, CIA). The loyalty is to the principles of one's Constitution and by extension to the human beings who are your countrymen and who have put you in a position of trust in their interest, much the way any trust or inheritance is managed for the benefit of those for whom it was ostensibly created. But in the false dichotomy he sets up, the most salient "dual loyalty" at the time of the WMD propaganda for going to war with Iraq was to the Bush administration or to the CIA. He claimed that those who had discovered the falsity of the WMD's were inclined therefore to "loyalty" to their jobs in CIA, the way a scientist who discovered cancer would be loyal to his microscope and report the disease (rather than be loyal to his religion and try to pray it away without telling the patient he was sick).
I found the choice of phrase really off, given that there is another simpler meaning, such as in the AIPAC spy cases. But he had a handy deflector for that in his work of fiction: England. Britain is a country, he said, that everyone thinks is just like America. There is no sense that they might have interests different from ours (oh yeah? what about for Irish-Americans?), therefore nobody thinks they are running intelligence operations which conflict with our interests (really? I figure Britain, France, and Israel are all looking out for themselves and spying like a proctologist). This kind of tiptoeing around the facts not only interested me, but some of the callers in to the station, who made some of the same points I immediately saw as well, wondering why he, for instance, he did not seem to want to include Israel in his fiction about whatever it is he is trying to make a point about.
I'm guessing that this is part of the harrowing of the ground to get us ready to fight Iran. Sorry, I do not remember the name of this future New York Times bestseller.

They never stop trying to crudely manipulate and this isn't the first time we've heard opf them perfectly misunderstanding a very old, well-established, well-known concept ("dual loyalty" has always referred to national loyalty, that's the entire point of connecting it with them). They regularly do this kind of reframing, yielding a frankenstein version of what ought to be a simple familiar thing since they are trying to (exactly as the Bush aide said) create their reality, mainly by storytelling, emphasizing some facts and pretending others don't exist. That in a nutshell summarizes a ton of things Israel regularly does to Palestine, archeology, laws, visiting foreigners, and so forth. Could this be why Holocaust denial scares them so much? In the beginning was the Word, creation is by telling, apocalypse is editing?

Actually there's a more recent example we just remembered. The simple dishonesty and injustice of this dirty little trick always freshly infuriates. See? We've just told you how to feel about this. Actually, we'll prolly be right. Anyhow, this very brave and talented Palestinian director has put together an outstanding weapon against modern Nazism, called "Slingshot HipHop." We're trying to buy copies and submit them to libraries because this thing is great, it's a great introduction to the issue, it's a tonic to Arab stereotypes and it's a truly fascinating movie on its own merits. When she was pitching this idea to denizens of the American cinema (shall we call it a broderbund?) they would turn and chat up their fellow, "Oh, she's doing something on how Jews and Arabs come together through hip-hop." She would then politely correct them: it not only is specifically about Palestinian hip-hop (and this was not the first time they were told this), but it also makes a point of deflating that very tactic, showing how in the earlier career of one of the artists followed in the film he was the "token black guy" in a Phil-Spector-esque entertainment product singing about vaguely partying. And they would leave her to scrounge for funding elsewhere and they would go on to make giant monuments of guano for Vin Diesel.

I notice there was no post by Xymph on the Anti-Zionist election list submited by Dieudonné to the European Election. Okay, so I think I have run down what the motive is for David Ignatius' novel at this time. The problem seems (although he skirts the dual loyalty issue most adroitly) is something to do with good cop-bad cop games with Iran. He likes the place and considers it a theocracy on top of a modern society. He is concerned, with others, such as Leon Panetta, CIA Director, that Israel not bomb Iran. This might of course be inconvenient for US troops in Shia dominated Iraq (who didn't see that coming?). So I see that Ignatius is about to appear in Monterey (an intelligence hub where at the military college there, one prof was canned for doubting Bush on 9/11 and the war in Iraq and GWOT in general - it caused a stir at the time). The forum at which Ignatius is to appear with Gen. Abizaid is the Panetta Insitute, in the Panetta Lecture Series. Same guy as Leon, whose Italian immigrant parents owned a restaurant in Monterey and launched their son through various elite Catholic schools into his present eminence at CIA. Ignatius is an Armenian-American. Retired Gen. Abizaid, successor to Tommy Franks, famously stated that although it would be a good thing to deter Iran's developing a nuke, "We can live with a nuclear Iran. We lived with a nuclear Soviet Union". So what you see is a counter-force to the think tanks of the neocon zionist right, but as I pointed out in my critique of Ignatius' problem in understanding dual loyalty, not so philosophically sound as to be up to the task of dealing with rule by lobby in the US. I can better understand him perhaps, but as we see with Obama, it is hard to struggle out of ill-chosen alliances and into healthier ones. Especially when you cannot name the problems for fear of merciless reprisal, which are career-ending or more lethal. So while engaged in discussions around whether or not Iran is building weapons, it must never be stated that Israel has them, and has them aplenty. Hell, no one is prepared to state that everyone from Pakistan to Israel should disarm. Disarmament, like impeachment, is off the table. Since this is the case, even if Iran is not building nukes, they probably should have them too. If you were an Iranian patriot, you might think that would save you from attack. These three men, Panetta, Ignatius and Abizaid are probably soul-mates, and they want to approach matters as JFK would do. It's funny, I seem to remember a book, Profiles in Courage, about politicians who fell on their swords to achieve some higher principle. But where the Soviet Union and Cuba were concerned, it is "Do as I do, not as I say." So they tiptoe and possibly carry a big stick.

Goldberg's NYT Op-Ed was so vacuous, silly, and Pythonesque that I chuckled quietly from beginning to end. Goldberg has succeeded in redefining the terms fact free and juvenile in the propaganda stakes.

He killed a girl who might've refused to sleep with him and suddenly this girl's Jewishness was the only criterion in the universe. In prison he will be medicated and handled safely beyond any hope of finding out what happened. I assume you are referring to Stephen Morgan of the North Shore of Boston, who murdered a woman he met in a summer school at NYU two years before, while she worked at a bookstore in Middletown, Ct. Very sad for the girl. But sadder still was to use her death as another excuse to whip a community into panic while the young man was at large. He is just some obsessive stalker who experienced a "failure to launch" in adolescence. Sent to a boys' Catholic high school, where he was not particularly successful or popular (although handsome), he joined the Navy where he served without incident for four years. He then tried to hit on the young woman who was the child of a Jew and a non-Jew. They found his "diary" you see, with some anti-semitic remarks in it, perhaps because the gal used her Jewish associations to try and dump him back when they knew each other. This was used as I said to whip up popular frenzy when the police found said diary left conveniently in his car (when will those psychos ever learn - don't put it in writing!) In the ridiculous atmosphere, it is once again impossible to talk about stalkers who kill because nobody really was focusing on that aspect, only on the threat to Jews. In that sense, the young woman was exploited as hell as well as stalked, poor thing. As for the Navy interlude, one of his acquaintances, a Jewish shipmate, came forward and indicated that there was something between them and maybe that was where the antisemitism started, not with the girl. Some kind of homoerotic tension in their lives. It makes sense, because the class Morgan met the girl in was about sexual identity. And I think it is also likely that the girl was ambivalent about her orientation too. But the media did not explore the sexual orientation side or some man's disappointment that the object of his obsession was perhaps uninterested in him because he was male. I find this all quite interesting because for the purpose of the storyline, the female victim is assumed by most to be Jewish, while nearby in Boston, a young medical student who shot a prostitute in a very similar way to how Morgan killed the bookstore person, point-blank, is, though named Markoff and also possibly characterizable as Jewish - well that angle does not come up. It's an interesting juxtaposition. Two young murderers of females, like mirror images of each other. One however is "worse" than the other? Not the one I am supposed to think is worse, however. I am not saying this to heap anything on any ethnic group, merely to point out how the media shapes our biases. You have only to read comments after any news story to see that generally the mob is being herded quite well. My final verdict? I'm thinking Philip Markoff is a common criminal with typical sociopathic tendencies. I'm thinking Stephen Morgan is mad. It is interesting that Morgan turned himself in, but Markoff had to be arrested.

I left this too vague - Markoff is exactly as Jewish as was the young woman murdered by Morgan - that is both of their fathers are Jewish. But those who brought up Markoff the murderer's affiliation were said to be dealing in antisemitic slurs. I think this is something worth discussing, as the two New England murders happened within a couple weeks of each other. Of course I suppose the point is that Morgan believed the girl to be Jewish and that is why he had to kill her. Is it? Or was he going to find another "reason"? Whereas Markoff robbed prostitutes and he killed the woman who fought back. But he preyed only on prostitutes, making him therefore discriminatory against sex trade workers. Are both men guilty of prejudice? Or of murder. I would say that prejudice is a lesser offense. But perhaps when the killings occurred both men thought that by killing someone of lower status they could .... my imagination fails me. It's just men killing women. So what else is new in this nasty old world? Put whatever label you want on it. It is exploitation and plain old murder.

They were hardly mirror images. Markoff was the standard Jewish ripper nightmare -- privilege literally preying on multiple vulnerable sex workers and then trying to use family connections to escape. Key thing is multiple victims: cold blood, planning, rotation with "normal life," a hobby which could've gone on forever. Morgan was an idiot with a bad crush on one (1) girl and a severe failure of parenting and education. (Personally it took us years to figure out stuff about rejection and basic relationships, and now we're amazed this stuff isn't regularly taught, especially since a lot of what we've learned comes in part from books on Not Being a Dick which lend themselves easily to teaching, lots of Virginia Satyr and Bandler & Grinder and psychology stuff. How many crazy people just didn't get to the moral introspective informal course described and were stuck brooding and brooding on a simple problem of framing until they did something everyone regrets and nobody prevented?)
